Sleeping Dogs Movie Is In Development, Simu Liu To Play Wei Shen

Summary

  • Simu Liu is set to play the film’s protagonist in the in-development Sleeping Dogs movie.
  • Square Enix has not provided a statement regarding the movie adaptation when asked for comment.
  • Liu also wants to advocate for a game sequel, potentially leading to a remake or remaster if the movie is successful.

The other day, we reported on how, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu was negotiating for the rights to turn the Sleeping Dogs game into a movie after a failed attempt by Hong Kong and Hollywood star Donnie Yen.

Apparently, things are much further out than what was presented by Liu — at least according to one anonymous source.

One “source close to the project” has told IGN that it is a little further ahead than rights negotiations and that the movie is in development. As one might expect, Simu Liu will play the film’s protagonist, Wei Shen.

Square Enix has not issued a statement about this when pressed for comment.

Given how Liu has been pursuing the project, it’s understandable that it’ll be a vehicle to feature the actor. It’s also a good fit since Liu is a Canadian of Chinese descent, and we all know he’s good enough to handle the action scenes, given what we’ve seen from Shang-Chi.

No other details were shared outside of that, so whether the in-development movie will be a 1:1 adaptation of the game is unknown.

10 Underrated Action Games You Need To Play

For those who love eradicating everything that stands in their way, we list several amazing underrated games with high-octane action.

Released in 2012 and developed by the now-defunct United Front Games, Sleeping Dogs’ plot revolved around undercover police officer Wei Shen who infiltrates the Sun On Yee Triad organization. While Sleeping Dogs received positive reviews from critics at launch, it failed to meet Square Enix’s sales expectations.

The action game has regained cult classic status over the years, with fans voicing their requests for a sequel. Speaking of which. Liu has publicly said that outside of the movie, he also wants to push for a game sequel, too. Who knows? If the film becomes a hit, perhaps Square Enix can re-release a remake/remaster of the game and build from it.

In our review from 2012, it was awarded a 9/10 score, in which our review said, “you’ve been waiting for an open world thriller that doesn’t sacrifice storytelling and character depth, offering one of the best hand to hand combat system in gaming, enriched by great driving, awesome writing and a charming setting, Sleeping Dogs is just the game you’re looking for, no questions asked.”

Liu will next be seen in the drama flick, “Last Breath” alongside Woody Harrelson, which is set to hit theaters later this month. The film’s plot is about “A true story that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crew mate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface.”
