If the gap between Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the final part of Square Enix’s Remake project is too great to bear thinking about, Chinese developer, Ultizero Games, has you covered. New footage from the upcoming action role-playing hack-and-slash game, Lost Soul Aside, has been circling social media suggesting the blend of genres and combat style will fill the Final Fantasy-shaped void.

Inspired by Final Fantasy 15, Lost Soul Aside has been in the works since 2014 under independent developer Yang Bin. After a prototype grabbed the attention of Sony in 2016, the title entered the China Hero Project and the Japanese publication helped Bin establish Ultizero Games to develop the title, with Sony taking the reins as publisher.

Lost Soul Aside’s Traversal Turns Skateboarding Soulslike

Lost Soul Aside has recently crept beneath gamers’ radars while the devs work hard on completion, but thanks to a 41-second clip shared by X account Pure PlayStation (@Pure_PS), followers got a stunning look at a gameplay-infused cutscene flaunting impressive traversal.

The clip shows protagonist Kazer, a swordsman who shares DNA with a supernatural race, skateboarding his way through a ruined city made of stone on the back of a piece of metal – which could turn out to be a magic-infused artifact. The city is under attack from flying crafts raining a hail of bullets at the Noctis-styled character, who makes light work of dodging various obstacles and gunfire before deploying a set of wings to land.

Viewers were quick to point out the seamless combination of gameplay and cutscenes to make this sequence as fluid as possible, boasting the game’s range of abilities, including slicing through walls of stone, slingshot traversal, and the dark fantasy’s skateboard routine that awarded the game its unofficial title of “Tony Hawk Souls”, merging the titles of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and the Dark Souls franchise.

An added clip to the post showed Kazer fighting a boss with airborne abilities within a stone courtyard, displaying a range of sweeping melee and magic attacks in stylish, real-time, combat, again, effortlessly mixed with high-octane cutscenes.

Releasing as a PlayStation exclusive on the PS4 and PS5 sometime in 2024, Lost Soul Aside has been compared to Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Forspoken, the Bleach anime, and its inspiration, Final Fantasy 15, for its world and character design.
