Bungie CEO Steps Down Amid Marathon Fiasco

Following confirmation earlier this month that Bungie’s independence from Sony is on thin ice, the studio is undergoing a major shakeup, as its CEO, Pete Parsons, is stepping down after 23 years of service.

Parsons’ departure comes hot on the heels of Marathon’s delay amid lukewarm reception and the development woes of the extraction shooter.

The studio boss penned a letter to fans as he passes the torch.

Bungie CEO Steps Down Amid Studio Turmoil

In an announcement on the studio’s website, Parsons said, “After more than two decades of helping build this incredible studio, establishing the Bungie Foundation, and growing inspiring communities around our work, I have decided to pass the torch. This journey has been the honor of a lifetime. I am deeply proud of the worlds we’ve built together and the millions of players who call them home – and most of all I am privileged by the opportunity to work alongside the incredible minds at Bungie.”

Parsons adds that today marks the “right time for a new beginning,” and how the future of Bungie will be in the hands of a new generation of leaders.

Taking over for Parsons will be Destiny 2 GM and Chief Development Officer Justin Truman, who wrote his own letter as well.

Truman notes, “I am committed to supporting and working alongside every member of the team here as we continue pouring our hearts and souls into these worlds. Worlds that we love, and that we hope have been worth your time and your passion. Because ultimately those worlds only exist, and thrive, with you in them.”

Truman confirms they will have more to show about Destiny 2 and Marathon later this year, though they failed to provide specifics. Perhaps Marathon’s release date will be finalized?

It has been a challenging few months for the studio, what with Marathon’s art fiasco, Destiny 2’s latest expansion failing to generate the kind of buzz Bungie was expecting.

Let’s hope that with Truman’s leadership, things turn around for the studio — not just in games development, but in studio culture too, since it’s been reported before that it wasn’t an easy place to work in.
