Fortnite AI-Voiced Vader Curses And Drops F-Bombs

Summary

  • Gamers made Darth Vader’s AI-generated voice swear and say inappropriate things.
  • Epic Games quickly patched it with a hotfix to prevent further misuse.
  • James Earl Jones’ family approved AI use to let fans experience Darth Vader.

Earlier today, Epic Games announced that they are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring Darth Vader’s voice back to life in Fortnite using the late James Earl Jones’ voice ((with consent by his estate).

While this new addition sounds cool on paper, who wouldn’t want to interact with Darth Vader, right? Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for gamers to have the AI-generated voice to say things that are very un-Vader-like.

Players have managed to get Vader to curse, drop F-bombs, and more on social media. It’s surreal to see, but it did happen (via CNET).

The AI behind the voice answers players, and it goes in any direction sometimes…as players can even have it talk about breasts.

This fun is short-lived, as Epic Games has announced that they have pushed out a hotfix immediately so this “shouldn’t happen again.” It looks like Epic might have tightened the language filters, so the AI couldn’t be tricked into saying things.

Thankfully, players recorded Dath Vader swearing before it was patched out. For gamers who have kids playing Fortnite, this shouldn’t be an issue, as parents must enable the option to allow voice and written communication with AI features for accounts associated with minors for it to be able to speak with Darth Vader.

While players might have missed their chance to hear Vader swear and whatnot, there are a lot of clips online, though it’ll pale in comparison to actually seeing it happen in a game.

In Epic Games’ announcement, the company posted the statement by James Earl Jones’ family, and why they decided to let AI use his voice in portraying the legendary character. “James Earl felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars, and he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it. We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character,” the note said.
