Once you reach the Citadel in Hollow Knight: Silksong, climb your way to the top, and take on the Cogwork Dancers, you’ll find you have a lot more work to do. Interacting with the cage will have a bunch of icons appear on your map, guiding you on where you need to go next.
The first of these icons we can actually reach is the one on the bottom left, but it’s not going to give up without a fight. You need to crawl your way through the vaults and sneak down onto The Stage, where you’ll find a pretty tough fight with a very flamboyant guy.
Trobbio is the wall locking your progress through the majority of the Underworks, and has a ton of very fast, very flashy attacks. I’d recommend immediately turning back to the left and opening up the shortcut when you find the Stage, for that reason.
The nearest bench is the Bellway bench, which is directly underneath the Stage, and only makes you walk a short distance. If you want to win, I’ll be showing you my loadout, strategies, and breaking down Trobbio’s attack patterns.
Loadout
As is usual, I went with the Upgraded Hunter Crest for this one, alongside my beloved Sting Shards. For the secondary weapon, though, I would recommend either the boomerangs or the drill. My final attempt was done with the drill for some nice extra damage, but if you want more range, then go for boomerangs.
I recommend the Warding Bell, since getting heals off within the chaos of this fight can be a struggle, and I’d rather lose that heal than die. The Weavelight is there for a similar reason, as it helps get you 1/4th of the way to another heal almost instantly, without needing to attack.
I would recommend going in with at least two nail upgrades, so the fight goes a hell of a lot faster. You can get a third by doing a lengthy sidequest at this point, but frankly, if you hated the Pale Rose quest in Hollow Knight, you might want to settle for two.
Upgrading your tools is always nice, and having around two extra bars of Silk will help alleviate the struggle to regain that, and can make Weavelight an open slot instead. This fight is difficult, so if you aren’t confident, you can go find more mask shards and items, then come back.
How to Beat Trobbio
Phase 1
Before you even begin the fight, you need to be cautious of Trobbio and mindful of your positioning. The attack he does in the intro cutscene can damage you, so stay off to the side, just close enough to be able to hit him as he rises, but far enough so you don’t get hit.
He will most likely begin with his tornado spin attack. He can start this one in the air or on the ground, and will always spin until he hits a wall, bounce off, then release two smaller tornadoes as he winds down. This is where the drill comes in handy.
If you’re running it, wait for him to start winding down, then dash to get above him, and start drilling into him. If you do it right, you should get every hit of the drill off, while also staying completely safe. If you aren’t running the drill, wait for the tornadoes to pass, then get a couple of hits in.
He will frequently jump up into the air, and while he can perform several attacks out of this, it’s best to get a few hits in or take this time to heal, as you have a couple of seconds of him being entirely non-threatening. Just keep an eye out for an attack.
Namely, whenever he tosses bouncy balls around the arena, get the hell away from him. These balls do a ton of damage when they burst, and if you take direct contact with one, you will lose two masks on the spot. Don’t approach him until he’s finished throwing, and watch the orbs carefully.
Typically, after one or two attacks, he will duck under the floorboards. This is a great opportunity to watch where he goes and get hits in when he pops out, but you should take a couple of precautions, as it’s a little tricky.
Namely, there’s a good chance he pops all the way out and begins flying, and while the variant where he pops onto the floor makes this a worthwhile time to use your drill, this does mean you are gambling on tanking a hit. It’s far safer to just slash at him and react accordingly.
If he takes longer to come out, then you need to back away a little. He will toss bombs out of the floor, then move elsewhere. You can usually dodge this by staying a safe distance away, so if you’re unsure, just back up and use this as a chance to heal.
You can also run into quite a few fireworks popping out from the floor. These are rather easy to avoid by just not standing where the red smoke is, but do note that Trobbio will always pop out of the last firework to go off, and fly upwards, which is a great chance to attack.
Finally, he will frequently summon spheres of sparkles around the arena, which will swiftly explode. If you ever see him raise his hands with a grunt, assume you’re about to be blown up, and dash away into the least sparkly spot, or start healing as a panic button if you can.
Next Phases
The phase changes whenever the area flashes red, but not much changes alongside that. His attacks get slightly more frequent, and you have a higher likelihood of seeing two attacks combined, so you may need to start playing safer.
To do so, I’d recommend throwing your Sting Shards out wherever he’s going to pop up next, attacking him in the air, and keeping your distance until you can get a heal off. Combining attacks like sparkles and balls can be incredibly deadly, so make sure you’re above three masks when possible.
Whenever he staggers, I’d recommend going all out instead of using the time to heal. It’s when he’s most vulnerable, you can absolutely get a drill or Sting Shard off, and the amount of nail hits you can get in will easily refill your entire silk bar.
After enough hits and carefully treading around his attacks, he should go down, crawling to the statue to no avail. You will be rewarded with access to the rest of the Underworks, and with a mirror that functions exactly like Stun Spore from the original Hollow Knight.
