Many players will know Abubakar Salim’s voice from his epic adventures as Bayek in Assassin’s Creed Origins. The multi-skilled actor has also recently created the highly acclaimed Tales of Kenzera: Zau, in which he voiced Zau and Zuberi. To add to his never-ending talents, the British Academy Games Award nominee will be on our screens this summer as he gets stuck into his role as Alyn of Hull in House of the Dragon’s upcoming second season.

As Ubisoft unveiled what they were working on next in the AC franchise, revealing that players would be heading to feudal Japan, controversy raised its ugly head surrounding one of its characters, the real historical Samurai, Yasuke. Salim weighed in on the hotly debated topic by calling the whole thing “hilarious” – and not in a funny way either.

Even though there is evidence that Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ Yasuke is, in fact, a Samurai in the Sengoku era, gamers have come out in full force with racist and truly uneducated comments regarding his ethnicity, calling the whole thing “woke” – if only they knew the true meaning behind the only word they seem to know in the entirety of the dictionary, they may reconsider using it so bloody often.

In light of this, Abubakar Salim, who slipped easily into the shoes of protagonist Bayek in Ubisoft’s 2017 Assassin’s Creed Origins, has stated his opinion on the whole mess via Twitter/X. Having hinted that he too had gone through something similar in his role as Bayek, Salim said that he found the whole situation “hilarious” before saying “I’m sure your hill has a lovely view” which is in reference towards those who are willing to die on it in a bid to keep the hate and the online vitriol on a constant loop over denying Yasuke’s existence.

Thankfully, there are those who aren’t put off by the ridiculous remarks and choose to follow actual historical events rather than the hive mind. The pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed Shadows are already proving to be in a “very strong” position according to Eurogamer and those who were worried about having to constantly be connected to the internet have had their concerns soothed by Ubisoft as the company wrote “”Assassin’s Creed Shadows will not require a mandatory connection at all times. An online connection will be needed to install the game, but you will be able to play the entire journey offline, and explore Japan without any online connection.”
