Summary
- A Minecraft Movie breaks records with over $301M global launch earnings.
- Despite rotten reviews, the film becomes the biggest opening earner of 2025.
- SEGA’s Sonic The Hedgehog success sparks interest in more game-to-movie adaptations.
Further highlighting the disconnect between critics and moviegoers, Warner Bros. A Minecraft Movie, which was panned by critics, has now made movie history with its global launch numbers.
Starting today, A Minecraft Movie is now the biggest opening video game film of all-time, which is no small feat given the string of successful games-to-movie adaptations we’ve got recently.

Minecraft Movie Rakes in More Than $150 Million In Domestic Opening
The Minecraft Movie’s opening domestic take was a record-shattering $157 million, and it also netted $144 million overseas for a global launch receipt of $301 million (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The previous record holder was NIntendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie by Universal Pictures in 2023, which took in $146.4 million over its three-day launch, and that’s on an Easter weekend, even. The film openened on a weekday, earning $204 million through Easter Sunday.
Not only is A Minecraft Movie the biggest opening day for a video game film, but it’s also the biggest opening earner of 2025 as well. While the movie is at a mediocre 49% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, that hasn’t dampened the movie’s performance. Never underestimate the power of kids and their pull in having their parents take them to the latest kiddie movie. It’s Minecraft, which is the best-selling game in history, and one that’s played by millions of kids every day; of course it’s going to do well.
Warner Bros. produced the film along with Legendary Pictures, and it stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Jack Black (School of Rock), Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), and Emma Myers (Wednesday). The film was helmed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite).

A Minecraft Movie Creative Team Didn’t Take Things “Too Seriously” When Adapting The Game
With A Minecraft Movie releasing this Friday, the movie’s creators have explained the team’s process while making the recent Minecraft adaptation.
Minecraft Movie’s success is the latest video game film adaptation that raked it in the box office. SEGA’s Sonic The Hedgehog Movie crossed over $400 million during its theatrical run, and was successful enough that SEGA greenlit a fourth movie in the franchise already.
While The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel is already confirmed to be in the works, Nintendo also announced that The Legend of Zelda movie adaptation is set to hit theaters in 2027. Joining in on the family-friendly games-to-movie fun is Sony, who has recently expressed a desire to turn Astro Bot into a feature film as well.
With A Minecraft Movie’s massive initial opening, I can assume that Warner Bros. and Legendary are already prepping for a sequel. Chances are, we’ll get an official confirmation of that once the movie’s theaterical run is over.
