Most Iconic Swords In Anime

Some swords are more than just weapons, they’re extensions of the wielder’s soul, symbols of defiance, legacies passed down, or instruments that change the course of entire worlds. In anime, the sword is often where myth, memory, and meaning collide.

Whether it’s a cursed blade born from malice or a sacred relic that shines with justice, iconic swords in anime often tell a story of their own. They’re forged not just in steel but in the pain, ambition, and dreams of the characters who carry them.

When Toji Fushiguro draws his Split Soul Katana in Jujutsu Kaisen, he doesn’t just bring out a weapon, he unleashes a blade that ignores physical durability and slashes at the very soul of its target.

This isn’t a sword that relies on cursed energy. In fact, it’s terrifying because it doesn’t. The Split Soul Katana can cut through even the toughest cursed spirits and reinforced sorcerers because it targets their spiritual core. During the Shibuya Incident arc, Toji wielded it with such precision and savagery that not even Dagon, a Special Grade cursed spirit, could withstand it.

A cursed technique resurrected Toji’s own body, but his soul’s willpower was so immense that he regained control, using this very blade to carve his path through sorcerers and curses alike. In a world where cursed energy reigns supreme, the Split Soul Katana is a quiet rebellion, deadly, efficient, and deeply symbolic of Toji’s rejection of the Jujutsu society that cast him aside.

Before Zoro could even wield Enma properly, it tried to rip the life out of him.

Forged by the legendary swordsmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo and once belonging to Kozuki Oden, Enma isn’t just a prized treasure in One Piece, it’s one of the only blades to have ever scarred Kaido’s near-invincible body. After Oden’s death, the sword was passed down to his daughter Hiyori, who eventually entrusted it to Zoro.

The sword tests its wielder by drawing out an excessive amount of Busoshoku Haki, draining it from the user’s body whether they’re ready or not. If the user can’t handle it, Enma will either cripple them or kill them. But Zoro is no ordinary swordsman. Rather than resist Enma’s will, he chose to adapt, forcing his own growth to catch up with the sword’s demands.

In doing so, he unlocked greater control over his Haki, stepping closer to becoming the world’s greatest swordsman.

Arthur’s Excalibur

Fire Force

Arthur’s holding Excalibur from Fire Force

Fire Force (2019)

Fire Force

Release Date

July 6, 2019

Directors

Yuki Yase, Tatsuma Minamikawa

Writers

Yamato Haijima, Tatsuma Minamikawa

Arthur Boyle doesn’t need a sense of direction, he needs a sense of delusion.

In Fire Force, Excalibur is technically just a hilt. What gives it form is Arthur’s imagination. The stronger his delusion that he is a noble knight on a quest, the more powerful the plasma blade becomes. At its peak, Excalibur reaches temperatures hotter than the sun’s surface, slicing through enemies like infernal butter.

What’s fascinating is how the blade scales with Arthur’s mental state. When he fully believes in his knight persona, Excalibur can clash with even Dragon, one of the strongest characters in the series. It’s absurd, but that’s the beauty of it. The more Arthur escapes reality, the more real his power becomes.

And behind all of it lies a tragic truth: Arthur uses his knight fantasy to cope with the trauma of being abandoned by his parents. His sword is iconic not just because of its power, but because it’s forged entirely from pain, delusion, and a boy’s need to believe in something greater.

Naruto: Shippuden

Release Date

2007 – 2017

Network

Adult Swim

Directors

Hayato Date, Masaaki Kumagai, Yasuaki Kurotsu, Osamu Kobayashi, Chiaki Kon

It doesn’t just cut, it feeds.

Samehada is a living sword, made of scales and muscle, and it has a hunger for chakra. First introduced in Naruto as the weapon of Kisame Hoshigaki, Samehada is unlike any other blade in the ninja world. It can sense chakra, strip enemies of their energy, and even reject wielders it doesn’t respect.

During Kisame’s battles, Samehada proved to be more of a symbiotic partner than a weapon. It healed him by feeding him chakra and adapted to his monstrous fighting style. But after his death, it eventually found another host: Killer Bee. At first, the sword resisted him, but over time, it warmed up to his enormous reserves of chakra, especially the power of the Eight-Tails.

The most bizarre moment came when Samehada fully wrapped itself around Bee to protect him, showing a level of sentience rarely seen in weapons

Future Trunks’ Sword

Dragon Ball Z

Future Trunks holding his sword from Dragon Ball Super

He came from a ruined world with one goal: to stop it from happening again.

Future Trunks’ sword in Dragon Ball Z is as symbolic as it is deadly. When Trunks first appeared and sliced Frieza to pieces in seconds, it changed everything. Not just for the characters, but for viewers too, it introduced time travel, alternate timelines, and a version of Trunks hardened by loss.

The sword itself has no name, and for the longest time, fans debated whether it had any special properties. But in Dragon Ball Super, when Trunks unlocked the Sword of Hope, an ethereal, glowing version of his blade empowered by the spirits of the living, it was confirmed that the sword’s power came not from craftsmanship, but from the wielder’s resolve.

Elucidator And Dark Repulser

Sword Art Online

Kirito holding Elucidator And Dark Repulser from Sword Art Online

IElucidator and Dark Repulser are legendary not because they’re rare, but because they’re wielded by the only player capable of using them together. Elucidator, a black, obsidian-colored blade, is Kirito’s main sword, looted from a boss drop. Dark Repulser, crafted by Lisbeth using a Crystallite Ingot, complements it perfectly.

The Dual Wield skill is a hidden ability that only Kirito unlocks due to his high reaction speed and game-breaking reflexes. With both swords in hand, he became known as the “Black Swordsman,” dominating Aincrad’s toughest floors.

Their most iconic moment came during his battle with Heathcliff, where Kirito used his signature move “Starburst Stream,” unleashing a flurry of devastating strikes that left fans breathless. These swords aren’t just powerful, they’re symbols of what SAO was all about: surpassing limits in a world where death was real.

Engraved with the words “Destroy Demons,” Rengoku’s sword was more than just his weapon, it was a reflection of his soul.

In Demon Slayer, each Hashira has a uniquely colored Nichirin blade that corresponds to their breathing technique. Rengoku’s burned with a fiery orange hue, a perfect match for his Flame Breathing style. But it wasn’t just the sword that stood out, it was how he used it.

During the Mugen Train arc, Rengoku held the line against Akaza, an Upper Rank demon, despite knowing he was outmatched. With his Nichirin blade clutched tightly, he unleashed devastating flame-based forms like “Rengoku” and “Blazing Universe,” pushing his limits even as his body began to fail.

The blade eventually cracked under the pressure, but even in death, it didn’t shatter completely. Much like Rengoku himself, the sword stood tall, damaged, but unbroken.

3

Demon Dweller Sword

Black Clover

Asta holding Demon Dweller Sword from Black Clover

Asta shouldn’t be able to fight mages. He has no magic.

But that’s where the Demon Dweller Sword comes in. Gifted to him through the power of his grimoire, this massive blade allows Asta to absorb and release the magic of others, a perfect counterbalance in a world where magic is everything.

Unlike his Demon Slayer sword, which just cancels magic, the Demon Dweller can actually store spells and fire them back. It made its debut during Asta’s battle against Mars in the dungeon arc and quickly became his go-to weapon for deflecting ranged attacks and turning his enemies’ power against them.

The sword’s appearance shifts depending on how much anti-magic energy it absorbs, sometimes glowing with a strange, otherworldly aura. It’s heavy, chipped, and hard to control, but it’s also proof that even a magicless boy can stand tall among prodigies.

2

Zangetsu

Bleach

Release Date

2004 – 2023-00-00

Network

TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, TVh, TVQ, TSC, BS TV Tokyo

Showrunner

Tite Kubo

Zangetsu isn’t just Ichigo’s sword, it’s his identity split in two.

When Bleach began, Ichigo’s Zanpakutō was a massive cleaver, rough and unrefined. But as he grew stronger, so did Zangetsu, evolving through multiple forms, Shikai, Bankai, and eventually, its true dual-wield form. The sword is tied directly to Ichigo’s inner world, where his Hollow and Quincy powers take shape as two versions of Zangetsu.

The revelation that Old Man Zangetsu was actually the Quincy spirit, while the Hollow was his true Zanpakutō, reshaped how fans saw the entire series. Every swing of the blade reflected Ichigo’s inner conflict, between peace and rage, restraint and instinct.

Zangetsu’s Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, drastically increases Ichigo’s speed, letting him cut through reality itself with Getsuga Tenshō. It’s iconic because it’s personal, a weapon that grows not just in power, but in meaning.

1

Dragon Slayer

Berserk

Guts holding Dragon Slayer from Berserk

It’s not elegant. It’s not fast. But nothing feels more Berserk than watching Guts swing the Dragon Slayer.

The sword is absurdly massive, more a slab of iron than a blade, and yet Guts wields it with brutal grace. Forged by the blacksmith Godo as a failed experiment, it was never meant to be used. But in Guts’ hands, it became a legend. After the Eclipse, it turned into something more, a grave marker, a statement of vengeance, and a weapon soaked in the blood of apostles and demons.

Eventually, the Dragon Slayer absorbed so much demonic essence that it gained the ability to harm ethereal beings like astral spirits and gods. It transcended the physical world, much like Guts himself, who walks a path between man and monster.

The Dragon Slayer is iconic not because of what it can do, but because of what it represents: rage, loss, perseverance. Every swing of that sword carries the weight of a broken world.
