Nintendo Switch 2 Could Still Get Zelda Wii U Remasters

One of the last Wii U exclusives that recently seemed stuck there forever still has a chance of returning, as Nintendo has confirmed that one of the lost Legend of Zelda remasters could come to the Switch 2, despite it appearing on the system in its original form.

Pretty much every Wii U exclusive is available on the Nintendo Switch, with the few holdouts being tied to the hardware, such as Star Fox Zero. The big exceptions to this are the HD remasters of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. These seemed like easy ports, yet they are still trapped on the Wii U.

In response to criticisms of the Nintendo Switch 2’s price, Nintendo suggests that people should use the original Nintendo Switch consoles instead.

With The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker being one of the Nintendo Switch 2’s GameCube titles, fans assumed this was the death knell for the HD remaster. However, it was confirmed by the Kinda Funny Games YouTube channel (via Video Games Chronicle) that the HD version of Wind Waker is still on the table.

According to Tim Gettys from Kinda Funny Games, they spoke to Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Product Development, and asked about the fate of Wind Waker HD. Bihldorff said that it could still appear on the platform.

If Wind Waker HD comes to the Nintendo Switch 2, it wouldn’t be the first time that a game is available on both Nintendo Switch Online and as a paid release. Super Mario 64 is currently available in its original form, while an enhanced version was purchasable as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

It’s still surprising that the HD remasters of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess aren’t available on the Switch, especially considering that the system had plenty of dry periods that could easily have used some easy ports. Hopefully, if they do leave the Wii U one day, then they’ll be available on both the Switch and its successor, ensuring that as many people as possible can play the best versions of those games.
