There will be spoilers for Granblue Fantasy Relink’s Ferry Fate Episodes
As I’ve discussed in my review for Granblue Fantasy Relink, there’s a lot to enjoy about the action-RPG. While story isn’t its biggest focal point, there are still quite a few interesting stories told via the game’s Fate Episodes system. And none of those shine as brightly as that of Ferry.
The Fate Episodes are voiced vignettes chopped up into short chapters, which tell a story about each of the characters in the game’s extensive roster. I’ve enjoyed them because they are well voiced and tightly written. I can’t help but nerd over the clever use of extended metaphors to bring home the altruistic message that each of the Episodes culminates to. The prime example of this is Ferry’s story.
Ghost Girl
Ferry’s tragic backstory unfolds early in her Fate, revealing a sorrowful past. Raised in a village, she lived with her sister and parents. When her sister fell ill and left for distant treatment, a pandemic struck the village, claiming her parents and threatening Ferry’s life. Desperate, she prayed for salvation, and Celeste, the goddess of death, granted “unlife” to the villagers, preventing them from reaching the afterlife.
Dragon Age Origins’ Expansion Is A Great Blueprint For Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC
An expansion should feel substantial.
Ferry’s corporeal form faded, and, fearing rejection, she resided on the outskirts of her haunted village, forming bonds with ghosts. When the crew, led by Gran (or Djeeta), arrived and uncovered the mystical barrier imposed by Celeste, they defeated her. This allowed the undead to find peace in the afterlife, concluding Ferry’s haunting tale. It was also the beginning of her journey in the game.
Thematically, Ferry’s vignettes explore love in its various forms—romantic and otherwise. Her personal journey is fueled by the love for her missing sister, motivating her to join your crew. Simultaneously, her tale intertwines with that of a woman diligently crafting a blanket for her absent husband.
The two women share daily moments on a bench, exchanging stories. As the blanket nears completion, Ferry’s commitment leads her to battle some monsters for a crucial spool of thread. Growing concerned about the prolonged wait for the husband’s return, Ferry eventually discovers, in a desert quest, that both the man and the woman are deceased. It becomes evident that the woman sought out Ferry to help her find resolution for her afterlife journey, driven by the desire to finish the blanket and find her husband’s resting place.

In a poignant final conversation, warmth, both physical and metaphorical, takes center stage as the lady asks if the husband found the blanket pleasing. Reflecting on previous moments of comfort near the woman, Ferry constructs a new grave for the couple, wrapping the completed blanket around it to bring closure to their intertwined stories of love and loss.
Endgame Motivation
Suppressing tears, I tapped my fingers rhythmically on my chest—an instinctive comfort ritual when emotions become overwhelming. Characters with bittersweet stories resonate deeply with me, particularly Final Fantasy X and X-2’s Yuna, and Final Fantasy 13-2’s Serah. Their journeys, marked by solace amid isolation and death, strike a chord, perhaps providing a way to grapple with the inevitability of departure.
“It’s okay now. They’ll never be apart again,” Ferry tells her ghost pals.
Ferry’s narrative, especially in Granblue Fantasy Relink, stands out due to its open-ended nature. Despite the beauty in her vignette, unanswered questions linger—will she find her sister? Why does she have a tangible form to interact with the crew and others? These uncertainties drive my engagement with her in endgame content, fueling speculation about her unresolved quest. Much like the woman she assisted, is Ferry present due to lingering matters, especially finding her sister? The elusive nature of her storyline raises the possibility of her eventual disappearance into the sky’s ether.
For now, I’ll continue empowering her as the cornerstone of my roster, as I look forward to the next chapter in her enigmatic journey.
