RuneScape’s New Expansion Hides a Dark Secret — And Fans Just Spotted It

Summary

  • Jagex recently unveiled Havenhythe, its largest expansion, sparking excitement and concern among players.
  • Players are questioning Jagex’s decision to introduce new content that contradicts established lore and leaves old storylines unfinished.
  • The community is divided between appreciating the new quests and urging Jagex to maintain consistency and address older unresolved plot points.

Something unexpected just happened in Jagex’s latest expansion, and it’s not a new grind. Granted, Old School RuneScape has seen its highest number of quests in the past year, but fans are taking the excitement with a pinch of salt. Is the expansion meaningful or a discreet strategy by the devs to slowly rewrite history?

Jagex’s recent official announcement on the OSRS blog outlines the team’s strategy shift to storytelling.

For players, these fresh adventures are always a welcome change, but a good number can’t stand the various plotlines left unfinished and others subtly altered.

The heat is now piling up after the devs revealed Havenhythe, the biggest expansion yet in years.

Havenhythe: RuneScape’s New Beginning or a Forgotten Past?

At the just-concluded RuneFest 2025, Jagex released a trailer teasing the brand-new region east of Morytania expected to drop in 2026. It showcases a mysterious eastern continent characterized by ancient ruins and terrorized by vampyres.

What doesn’t add up is that the conflict between humans and the vampyres had long been resolved by the end of RuneScape’s Myreque questline. The player’s faction and the Vampyres had reached a truce, but in the latest reveal, they’re portrayed as a major threat again, which clearly contradicts the original story ending. One reddit user spotting the consistency posed:

“We were at a point of neutrality and peace negotiations with the vamps by the end of the questline. Are these new ones or what?”

The details look small, but the implications are massive for RuneScape lore. Why are the vampyres treated as an apocalyptic menace in Havenhythe while they have already ceased to be a threat?

Is there an upcoming new breed of vampyres or is Jagex trying to alter one of the most beloved storylines to accommodate the new content?

Old School RuneScape: More Quests, More Questions

Old School RuneScape’s Havenhythe expansion

Besides Havenhythe, other expansions such as Return to the Desert have brought entirely new conflicts and characters while some older ones remain unfinished. Story arcs like Penguin, Fairy Tale, and Dwarven quests are still abandoned; yet, the developers are introducing expansions that contradict past lore.

For the fan base, the major concern isn’t just unfinished projects-it’s the blatant disregard for RuneScape’s identity as expressed in the comments:

“I understand their primary questing focus is the Mahjarrat line. But the Dwarven quests left off with Forgettable Tale and have gotten no love; we still have no resolution to the vampire questline, and we haven’t gotten anything to expand the desert questline toward accessing Menaphos.”

The community is somewhat divided on the new approach, with a good number of players appreciating the new questing pace. The rest question Jagex’s genuine intent, requesting some consistency.

A road map would quell this tension if it laid out what updates players should expect and provided assurance that older arcs won’t be abandoned. Most importantly, an expansion that ties into the existing lore would get better reception than a mere rewrite.

The fan base isn’t blinking, and they’re consistently checking any NPC, lore snippet, dialogue, and new quests for inconsistencies. If the latest expansion is part of Jagex’s dark secret in the game, it won’t stay hidden for long.
