South Of Midnight: Hardest Bosses, Ranked

Alongside a fantastic story and a lore-rich world, South of Midnight offers its players some amazing boss fights, with alluring soundtracks to further complement them.

While there are several encounters with mythical creatures, not all of them can be considered boss fights because there is no health bar for them, just a fleeting sequence with their presence. Such an example would be the Altamaha-ha.

Whether you are still playing South of Midnight for the first time and want to know what bosses await you next, or have already completed the journey and are curious about which boss fights we consider the hardest, we will answer all those questions below!

I have played the entire game on Grand Weaver difficulty and will be preparing this list on that basis.

5 Benjy

“I Took My Hammer, My Ticket To Hell”

Chapter 4

Special Weakness

None

While Benjy does not attack you, he does have a boss health bar, which makes him eligible for this list.

With nothing to dodge, naturally, Benjy would be at the bottom of the list. But that does not stop him from being one of the best bosses in the game and the character that players will feel most sorry for defeating.

Benjy’s boss fight exists to help players get used to the platforming aspect of South of Midnight while teaching them to focus on attacking wounds during boss fights.

Let’s not forget that players are also introduced to some of the most breathtaking visuals and one of the best OSTs in the entire game during their trek to reach the top of Benjy.

4 Rougarou

The Most Traditional Boss Fight In The Game

Chapter 7

Special Weakness

None

Most bosses in South of Midnight are a humongous entity that performs telegraphed attacks, and you are bound to only attack them after performing a specific action. Rougarou decides to stand apart from that crowd.

Rougarou is the only boss fight with a classic arena that requires a hit-and-dodge fighting style, which, honestly, made me feel like I was fighting a Dark Souls boss—but thankfully without the excruciating difficulty.

Of course, Rougarou will perform some telegraphed attacks before shifting to a new phase, but those were also some of the easiest attacks to dodge in the entire game.

While the premise and the buildup for the boss fight are fantastic, I almost finished the entire fight hitless, which, in my opinion, makes Rougarou fall very short in terms of difficulty.

3 Two-Toed Tom

A Tragic Tale For Animal Lovers

Chapter 5

Special Weakness

Church Bell

After only getting a teaser for Two-Toed Tom in chapter 4, you will reach your long-awaited standoff just one chapter later.

Being the first proper boss and all, I expected Tom to go down easy, but South of Midnight had different plans for me.

Not only can you not damage him without ringing the church bell, but his charging jaw attacks are so difficult to dodge that I ended up having to restart the boss fight because of the damage I ended up taking from Tom while I was still getting the hang of the dodge timings.

In addition, entering the belly of Two-Toed Tom at the end of the fight and destroying the infection wound from the inside was among my favorite set-pieces in South of Midnight.

2 Kooshma

The King Of Common Enemies

Chapter 13

Special Weakness

None

Being an action-adventure game, I was certain that South of Midnight would contain a sequence where I would have to fight hordes of enemies back to back. I was extremely disappointed by the fact that South of Midnight would reserve this sequence for the final boss fight.

After all, by this point, you must have already memorized all the move sets of the common enemies and have all the health filaments. Kooshma does not really have a move set of its own, except the occasional tentacle attacks and in the dodging sequence after you deplete one of its health segments.

I honestly couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed. With Huggin’ Molly and Two-Toed Tom being such amazing boss fights, I asked myself, is this really it for the big bad Kooshma?

1 Huggin’ Molly

Chapter 9

Special Weakness

Blood Vessels

The teases, the buildup, and the execution—everything was done perfectly for the terrifying Huggin’ Molly boss fight. From the moment she is introduced, I couldn’t help but feel intimidated by her presence.

In terms of the gameplay, traversing around the arena is harder than the actual boss fight, as the gap between platforms actually increases the further you are away from Huggin’ Molly. I lost count to the number of times I fell into the abyss while jumping to the next platform.

Jumping aside, her entire move set revolves around making it harder for you to move around the arena with her traps, like a true arachnid.

Once you finish off one of her health segments, she relocates to a new area, and you have to do some platforming to reach her while keeping an eye out for her surprise attacks.

This makes the Huggin’ Molly boss fight a perfect blend of both combat and platforming, and my favorite boss fight in South of Midnight.
