Mysteries are objectives that lead to valuable rewards in Hell Is Us. While they are considered short, usually only having a couple of tasks to complete, some may span over the course of a couple of acts.
The Captain’s Office mystery is a perfect example of this, as players can start it immediately upon reaching Jova, one of the first areas in the game. However, there is no way to find a key item for this mystery until about halfway through the game.

How to Start the Captain’s Office Mystery
The first mention of the Captain’s Office occurs when you first reach Jova in Acasa Marshes. Speaking to the drunk soldier in the backyard of Vitalis’ house, you’ll learn that he has the key to the captain’s office and will only give it up to someone who gives him some more mead.
While exploring Jova, you’ll find half a bottle of mead in the fridge of a house on the Southwest side of town, next to the old well. You’ll know you’ve found the right house if there are dead bodies on the first floor.
Unfortunately, this isn’t enough mead for the soldier, and handing it over will only lead him to ask for a full bottle of mead from you. This marks the start of the Captain’s Office mystery.
You need to find the soldier a full bottle of mead in order to get him to hand over the captain’s office keys. However, there’s no way to get a full bottle of mead until Act 2 of Hell Is Us.
How to Complete the Captain’s Office Mystery in Hell Is Us
Players won’t be able to complete the Captain’s Office Mystery until they reach Act 2 of Hell Is Us and get Abbot Jaffer to Lake Cynon.
Getting Abbot Jaffer to Lake Cynon is as easy as speaking to him at the Pathem Abbey in Acasa Marshes, a location that was blocked off in Act 1, but becomes explorable in the second act.
Progressing through the Pathem Abbey, you’ll run into Abbot Jaffer on the main path, where you should exhaust his dialogue. Doing so will cause him to move to Lake Cynon the next time you visit.
Once Abbot Jaffer appears at Lake Cynon, he will go to the only wooden house in the entire area. Jaffer is standing in front of the house, with a yellow glowing item on a crate of alcohol next to him. Loot the crate to get a full bottle of mead.
This crate of alcohol isn’t here unless you get Abbot Jaffer to Lake Cynon.
With the full bottle of mead now in your inventory, return to the drunk soldier in Jova, whose name is now revealed to be Serge Sneff, and trade him the full bottle of mead. Sneff will be extremely excited, and because of your efforts, he will hand over the captain’s office key.
Now, all you need to do is go use the key on the captain’s office door to complete the Captain’s Office Mystery in Hell Is Us.
To find the captain’s office, climb up the ladder on the side of the large white building that’s near Victor’s forge in Jova, go through the attic, and then jump down to the balcony door.
The Captain’s Office Mystery Rewards
The reward for completing the Captain’s Office Mystery in Hell Is Us is all the loot inside the office. Players can find the following items inside the captain’s office:
- Recording – Vaas’ Plan
- Collar of Grief – Bargaining (Defensive Gear)
- Cap – Sabinian
- Prison Manifest (Research Item)
The Collar of Grief is a standout among the rewards due to its +1,500 endurance bonus, 15% damage absorption, and ability to restore health when using Lymbic Energy.
However, the Recording – Vaas’ Plan is a great reward too, as it gives us insight into how evil the captain actually is and how he shouldn’t be trusted.
