While we’re a few days away from HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 premiere, the network has already made a surprising announcement
ahead of it.
The announcement is none other than confirming the show is getting a third season! This isn’t surprising, since the showrunners did confirm Season 2 won’t be able to cover the entire second game’s plot.

HBO’s The Last of Us Season 3 Will Continue The Story Of The Last of Us Part 2
With the TV show’s second season only consisting of seven, one-hour episodes, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann plan to split the second game’s story into multiple seasons. What’s more, the story arc of the second game might even take longer than Season 3 to complete.
Mazin states he felt the series had “one or two more seasons” before reaching the end of Part 2.
When it comes to the Season 3 renewal, Mazin said (via Variety), “We approached Season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”
HBO’s Francesca Orsi, the head of drama and films for the company gave a statement as well. “It can’t be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of ‘The Last of Us.” Orsi added, “Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the entire executive producer team, cast and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up and we’re thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil’s storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season.”

While there will be differences in Season 2 from its source material, Naugty Dog boss and showrunner Neil Druckmann mentioned the “DNA is in there” which should appease fans.
Even if there’s no confirmation of a third game in the series, Mazin has said that they won’t got the way of Game of Thrones and overtake the game’s story, which is very good news.
HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on April 13, and fans can expect the show to explore previously “unseen stories” just like in the first season.
