HBO’s The Last of Us Season 3 Will Most Likely Be Longer Than Season 2 But It Won’t Be Enough
With Season 2 of The Last of Us consisting of just seven episodes, showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed to Collider that there’s a high possibility that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2.
When it was mentioned to Mazin that they would need a Season 4 to wrap things up or that they’ll have a much longer Season 3 than just seven or eight episodes, Mazin’s reply was straight to the point that he thinks “there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2.”
Further discussing future seasons, Mazin states, “We always think ahead. We thought ahead to Season 3 and Season 4, to try to get as much visibility as we can, so that we don’t end up in a situation where we’re sitting down and getting into details for a season and then going, “Oh, man, if only we hadn’t had that person say that one line or be in that spot or wear that jacket, this would be so much cooler.” So, we really do try to think things through fundamentally. The challenge for our first season was, how do we tell this big story in a way that’s complete and doable within an amount of time and with the budget we have? And with this season, it was, “Okay, this source material goes way beyond one season.”

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann says they “love” the changes they’ve made to The Last of Us Season 2’s story.
The TV show’s going past three seasons isn’t as surprising as some people might think, given that each season only has 7–8 episodes, which is far from most TV series, which stretch each season as long as 20 episodes.
While some might think The Last of Us going as far as Season 4 might be overkill, the showrunners are aware of going past the games.Mazin mentioned that they don’t want to the TV show to go the way of Game of Thrones, which went past the book series. Without going into spoilers, this undid all the plot development the hit HBO show did, as it ended on a whimper that left fans unsatisfied.
Hopefully, The Last of Us won’t end the same way. The last episode of Season 2 is set to air on HBO this May 25, which will presumably end on a cliffhanger.
