Chain wrestling was one of the most requested features WWE 2K fans wanted to see return. Good news: it’s back in WWE 2K25!

It’s not all about high-flying offense and power bombs. Sometimes, the best attacks in WWE 2K25 are combos.

The popular feature was last seen in WWE 2K19. Its return is welcome; it adds another storytelling element to the matches and better immersion overall, replicating the live WWE product better than ever.

We’ll go over how to initiate chain wrestling, the controls, and its benefits.

At the start of the match, you’ll see chain icons above the nameplates of the wrestlers. This indicates that they can lock fingers and engage in chain wrestling. One thing to be aware of is that you can only initiate chain wrestling at the start of a match. As the match gets underway, the meter for chain wrestling will deplete, so you need to make your move quickly.

Here’s how you initiate chain wrestling on each control setup:

  • Xbox controllers require pressing and holding the B button until chain wrestling begins.
  • PlayStation controllers require pressing and holding the circle button until chain wrestling begins.

Once chain wrestling is initiated, you’ll see a new HUD that gives you options to continue the chain wrestling technique.

Engaging Moves During Chain Wrestling

At the start of chain wrestling, you’ll be given prompts as to how you want to maneuver things. You can drive your opponent into a corner, switch positioning, wrench them, or attack them.

Driving your opponent involves you pushing your opponent into a corner. This breaks the chain wrestling loop but puts them in a dangerous position.

Switch lets you transition to another hold.

Wrench enables a grapple such as a headlock, armbar, or other options.

Attacking your opponent is just that: attacking them.

Move the left joystick in the direction of your desired move. For example, I’ll choose the drive option here if I want to drive John Cena into the corner.

The larger the slice size of the prompt, the easier it will be to complete that move.

VC is an important currency in WWE 2K25’s newest mode, The Island. Here’s how you obtain it and what it can be used for.

Next, you’ll be taken to another new HUD that offers a mini-game, for lack of a better term. Here, you’ll need to spin your left joystick until you feel feedback when it’s pointing in a specific direction. This is your indicator to keep the joystick pointing in that direction to fill the circle. Whoever fills the circle first completes the chain wrestling move.

Since I ended up victorious here (sometimes the computer opponent will “slip” and move their joystick even though it’s in the right direction), I’ll pin Cena into the corner and even have the option of hitting him with a cheap shot after the ref breaks us up.

Chain wrestling is a very welcome addition to WWE 2K25. It lets players take their time and feel out their opponents. Some superstars would rather get right into the action; remember that it takes two to tango. You can try to initiate chain wrestling, but you may be on the receiving end of an aggressive attack if it’s declined, so be careful!

You can use this to your advantage as well. If you see someone ready to lock fingers, don’t be afraid to catch them off guard, denying their advance and hitting them when they least expect it.
