Following the recent news that the Xbox brand is moving away from console exclusive games, Phil Spencer confirms that they don’t see a reason to keep first-party games exclusive to the Xbox brand of consoles.
“Our strategy is to allow games to be available,” Spencer recently told Destin Legarie. “To keep games off platforms..that’s not a path for us. It doesn’t work for us. What we’re doing now really enables us to build the best platform for the world’s best games.”

Spencer admits that it’s increasingly common for games to be available in places other than the traditional Xbox console. He wants Xbox to enable gamers and content creators to connect in any way possible, whether they’re playing Xbox games on PC, mobile, or console.
The Xbox brand has been trending this way for quite some time, embracing the simultaneous release of its games on console and PC. It has also allowed gamers to stream games onto mobile devices through Xbox Remote Play.

When Microsoft purchased major publishers like Bethesda and Activision, many expected it to be a way for Xbox to boost its high-profile console exclusives to compete with Sony and Nintendo. However, that hasn’t been the case outside a handful of games like Redfall and Starfield.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on PlayStation 5 early this year. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released on virtually every platform imaginable.

Those are just the beginning. A recent report says we will see games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
Combined with the recent “This is an Xbox” marketing campaign, which emphasizes that any device that can play video games is an Xbox, it becomes easier to comprehend a world where Master Chief is on a Sony or Nintendo platform.
Spencer has always doubled down on his desire to make Xbox games as accessible as possible, and this is the way to do it.
