Highlights

  • Warframe’s upcoming expansion 1999 will finally introduce a long-awaited romance system for players to enjoy in-game.
  • Creative director Rebecca Ford credits Baldur’s Gate 3 as a major inspiration for implementing romance into Warframe after 13 years.
  • The 1999 expansion will revolve around character Arthur’s quest to find Dr. Entrati in the titular year, set to release in Winter 2024.

Warframe, the free-to-play multiplayer shooter by Digital Extremes first released in 2013, is getting a comprehensive expansion titled 1999. The studio’s goal to include a romance system is finally coming to fruition within this update and the team is thankful to Baldur’s Gate 3 for the extra nudge to get it done.

Digital Extremes is also hard at work developing the sister game, Soulframe, and the team recently discussed how dangerously close the MMORPG’s title was to FromSoftware’s games – even though the game doesn’t fit within the parameters of the Soulslike genre. Warframe fans have plenty to look forward to, and soon they’ll be able to flaunt their rizz in-game.

Warframe Lacked An Appropriate Scenario To Encorpate A Romance System Before

In an interview with GamesRadar+, creative director Rebecca Ford revealed a romance system was always a talking point for Warframe, but there was never an opportunity to make it work in past gameplay. After being live for 13 years, however, it’s finally time for Warframe to follow Baldur’s Gate 3’s path.

Ford specifically had “always wanted to put some type of romance system into Warframe,” even though “there was never an appropriate scenario to do it.” Remaining on the drawing board since the game’s release, Ford now notes two elements that gave the team the drive to make romance a reality in Warframe.

“I think two things really gave us the courage to proceed. Of course, the success of Baldur’s Gate and their romance system was like, ‘okay, like, people do want this fantasy’,” Ford explained. “Baldur’s Gate was the push over the cliff for sure, and I’m grateful for that, that was one of the best gaming experiences for me, ever.”

The second driving force the director cited was ambition, saying “…we did have, I should say, ambitions of it, that fit the Warframe architecture, on and off…” It may have been a long wait for the devs and fans to see romance flourish in Warframe, but 1999 promises to take the game to new heights.

Warframe’s 1999 expansion will center around the character Arthur in his attempt to track down Dr. Entrati in the titular year and the update is expected to be released sometime in Winter 2024.
